The stimulus for this work, composed in 1924, was given by the French flautist Louis Fleury, who also gave the first performance of the work. The four single pieces “Pan”, “Tityre”, “Krishna” and “Monsieur de la Péjaudie” (a character of a novel by Henri de Régnier) attempt to depict the nature of these imaginary flautists from mythology, religion and literature. Their specific cast is given by the sophisticated rhythm and striking harmony. It is fitting that this charming work has recently been enjoying increasing popularity.
Mit der Urtext Edition aus dem Musikverlag Henle wird das Werk nun in einer ihm würdigen Ausgabe verlegt. Hier wird es mit ausführlichem Vorwort, das zur Entstehung und Interpretation wichtige Gedanken liefert, ausgestattet, ein Kritischer Bericht befindet sich in seinem Anhang und es liegt ein sorgfältig, angenehmer Notentext vor. Unbedingt empfehlenswert bei der Anschaffung des Stückes ist es zu dieser Ausgabe zu greifen.

Goethe has Mephisto say this in "Faust II" and the categorizing of musical works according to their levels of difficulty is thus relative in the extreme! Relative – depending on the perspective of a teacher, a student or a performer; nevertheless using our Henle criteria we are trying to differentiate between works, grading them according to whether they are easy, medium or difficult. This classification system is intended as an orientation and a help for those trying to find a suitable work amongst all of the excellent Urtext editions. In order not to be daunted by pieces with the level of difficulty 9, perhaps we might somewhat subjectively claim that with practice Goethe's quotation may be reversed: "The task is difficult, yet difficult [may become] easy [too]!"
