Musicians need to be able to rely on their music. Sheet music should be undistorted, free of errors, practical and durable. This is exactly what we provide. We call it Henle Urtext. Musicians around the world, both amateurs and professionals, know us.
Unlike the other music publishers, we have concentrated almost exclusively on producing Urtext editions of the great “classical” compositions ever since Günter Henle founded our company in 1948. As the world’s undisputed leader in this premium class, we have the most know-how about Urtext as well as the most comprehensive Urtext catalogue, comprising 900 titles to date.
In addition we also have:
- study scores: Urtext editions for reading and learning
- bibliophilic facsimile editions of manuscripts by great composers
- highly ambitious scholarly complete editions
- musicological books and periodicals
- a small selection of exquisite gifts that complement our programme.
Since its foundation over 60 years ago (in 1948), G. Henle Publishers has continually expanded its catalogue without having to follow fashions or short-lived trends. This is because Günter Henle, the publishing house’s far-sighted founder, had an inspired idea that has never changed: providing musicians with reliable and sustainable Urtext editions of music.
Currently a team of 25 highly skilled employees work at the publishing house in the south of Munich, including six musicologists with PhDs and four experienced music dealers.
Our musical scores are engraved by first-class craftsmen. We employ one of the best. However, a large number of the Urtext editions in our backlist were engraved by hand, using traditional metal plate engraving techniques. Our editions are exclusively printed and bound in Bavaria, which is why every Henle edition can claim to be 100% “Made in Germany”.
We export over 80% of our editions, showing our very strong international focus. Our largest markets are the US (with exclusive distribution through Hal Leonard, Milwaukee), Europe, Japan and Korea. In China we not only distribute the original Urtext but have also granted licences for Chinese editions.
Producing editions of “classical” music in excellent quality and distributing them around the world through dealers with optimal customer service – this is what we aspire to every day. Should you have any questions, wishes, praise or criticism, please contact us or actively engage with our greatly respected blog. We look forward to hearing from you.
