In the current state of knowledge, and within the aims and constraints of the "Beethoven Werke", it is hard to conceive of a better critical edition of these works.

...Se retrouver face à un texte "amputé" de tous les apports que les éditeurs successifs avaient ajouté laisse un moment perplexe. Mais une telle édition oblige le lecteur ou l'interprète à se remettre en cause, démarche indispensable pour de telles œuvres sur lesquelles plane l'ombre de la routine comme un vautour à l'affût de sa proie.
