Two "Best Edition" 2012 awards

Logo Best EditionG. Henle Publishers has been honoured with the German Music Edition Prize 2012 for two separate publications. On 23 March 2012 at the Frankfurt Music Fair, a volume in the Joseph Haydn Complete Edition and the Chronological thematic catalogue of the works of Max Reger and their sources were awarded "Best Edition".

Joseph Haydn WerkeThe edition in the Joseph Haydn Complete Edition is the 3rd volume of "The Creation" Hob. XXI:2. It contains a reproduction of Haydn’s sketches for the work with a transcription and extensive commentary. The volume was edited by Annette Oppermann, an editor at Henle Publishers who previously worked at the Joseph Haydn Institute in Cologne.

The jury said of its decision: "One of the most important works in western music is presented here in an edition that is not only top quality but at the same time possesses a high scholarly value and is a collector’s item. The sketches have remained unpublished until now and thus constitute an important addition to Haydn literature. A very fine transcription of the facsimile, striking presentation in a cloth slipcase."

Max Reger WerkverzeichnisThe other prize was awarded to a weighty – in both senses of the word – publication from G. Henle Publishers. The "Chronological thematic catalogue of the works of Max Reger and their sources" is a comprehensive reference work on Reger’s compositions. It was edited by the head of the Max-Reger Institute in Karlsruhe, Susanne Popp, together with her team.

The jury praised this milestone work, saying: "A lighthouse edition amongst the catalogues of works and an outstanding scholarly achievement. The works have a detailed and extensive commentary, which is no mean feat with a composer such as Reger. Both volumes also excel on account of their readability. The publishing house deserves particular recognition for the publication of such a complicated work that will scarcely turn a profit."
