Johannes Brahms
His significant output comprises chamber music, piano works, numerous choral compositions and songs (including settings of folk-song lyrics), as well as large-scale orchestral works in the 1870s and 1880s. His compositions are characterized by the process of developing variation. He is considered an antithesis to the New German School around Liszt, and an advocate of “absolute” music.

Die Edition ist mit mustergültiger Akribie ausgeführt, der Editionsbericht gibt auf etwa 80 Seiten erschöpfende Auskunft über jede noch so kleine Lesart oder Änderung innerhalb der Quellen; sinnvollerweise werden die Herausgeber-Eingriffe mit kleinem Pfeil aus der Masse der Anmerkungen herausgehoben. Sehr instruktiv sind auch die zahlreichen Faksimiles aus Autographen, Korrekturabzügen und Erstdrucken, die ganz gezielt erwähnenswerte Revisionen und Übergangsstadien zeigen.
Dass diese bemerkenswerten 'Übersetzungen' nicht länger im Verborgenen schlummern, ist das Verdienst des renommierten Brahms-Experten Robert Pascall, ... der sie im Rahmen der neuen Brahms-Gesamtausgabe in mustergültiger Form vorlegte. ... Diese Ausgrabungen haben keineswegs nur wissenschaftlich-historischen Wert, sondern sind durchaus ernstzunehmende Alternativfassungen, die auch pianistisch sehr attraktiv sind und eine Bereicherung des Repertoires darstellen.
