Beethoven in films

No other classical composer has featured as “lead actor” in quite the same way as Ludwig van Beethoven. On the occasion of the composer’s 250th birthday in 2020, Wolf-Dieter Seiffert not only sifted through all of the movies about Beethoven (from 1909), numerous documentaries about the composer (from 1954), countless interviews with artists on Beethoven and, in his opinion, the most worthwhile Beethoven masterclasses, but also catalogued them, wrote a brief description for each one and gave them a personal ranking. Where available, YouTube links to the films that are listed chronologically within each of the three main categories have been provided, and we hope they will provide a welcome opportunity for you to form your own opinion. Without giving too much away: this filmography is worth your while, and it can only be found HERE!
