Level of difficulty (Piano): difficult (Level 6/7)

The Fantasia in C major is one of only a few works by Joseph Haydn about which the composer personally expressed himself – in this case in a letter to the Viennese publisher Artaria. In March 1789 he wrote: “In a recent whimsical hour I wrote a totally new Capriccio for the pianoforte. Due to its taste, rarity and unique elaboration, everyone should be delighted with it, connoisseurs and amateurs alike. It is only one single movement, and rather long, but not at all too difficult.” Artaria was apparently also delighted with this idea-generating Capriccio, which he published during the summer of 1789 as “Fantesia.”
