Tableaux d'une exposition
En 1874 fut organisée en hommage au dessinateur et architecte disparu Viktor A. Hartmann (1834–1873) une exposition de ses aquarelles et de ses dessins dont la visite inspira à son ami Modest Moussorgski le cycle des «Tableaux d’une exposition». Cette œuvre pour piano constitue une étape marquante du répertoire de cet instrument. Composée en juin 1874 à Saint-Pétersbourg, elle est sous-titrée «Souvenirs de Viktor Hartmann». Illustratif et évocateur, son langage sonore donne véritablement vie aux tableaux et continue jusqu’à aujourd’hui de fasciner. L’édition Henle repose sur le manuscrit autographe rédigé très proprement. La partition est structurée conformément à celle de Moussorgski.

Modest Mussorgski
Créateur, avec «Boris Godounov», de l’opéra historique russe. Sa célébrité et son prestige ne vinrent toutefois qu’après sa mort. Il composa également des mélodies, de la musique pour piano, de la musique pour chœur et quelques œuvres orchestrales.
