D'un soir triste for Violoncello and Piano
Lili Boulanger died in 1918 at the age of just twenty-four and nevertheless made musical history: she was the first woman to win the prestigious “Prix de Rome” composition prize. The piece “D’un soir triste”, from the year of Boulanger’s death, seems like a personal legacy. The already seriously ill composer dictated the highly expressive music to her sister Nadia; a trio version, a duo version and an orchestral version came into being. The duo version for violoncello and piano is presented here for the first time in Urtext. The manuscript has a twenty-measure gap in the notation in the middle of the work. Cellist Clemens Krieger closed it for this edition – scholarly precise, on the basis of the other versions of the work. Thus, this short, expressive piece is also perfectly suited to concert performance.
