『8つの練習曲』（Op. 42）は、アレクサンドル・スクリャービンが多くの作品を生み出した時期に生まれました。長年の教授職により、彼の作曲活動は制限されていました。徐々に職務から解放され、1903年以降はようやく作曲に時間を多く使えるようになりました。そうして作られたのがこの練習曲 Op. 42です。ヘンレ原典版の出版にあたり、初版だけでなく、スクリャービンの死後に友人であり同僚でもあったニコライ・シリヤエフが出版した変奏版も注意深く分析されました。ボリス・ギルトブルクが運指を担当しています。練習曲第5番を含むこの版には、ヴィルトゥオーゾのレパートリーとして長年愛されている作品が収録されています。スクリャービン自身がこの曲について「力強さと壮大さにおいて交響曲第3番を凌ぐ」と語っています。
